CUBA: DO IT!

Cuba, the last pearl of communism, is a fantastic incentive destination. KLM will take you to Havana in about 10 hours, but alternative routes are also possible. Discover the old town where time seems to have stood still, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy all the beautiful local things. Old American 1950s cars, cigars and the best mojitos and rum.

Below an example program as we have carried out for a small (er) group of guests.

DAY 1

This day is used to get to the destination. So by plane from Schiphol to Havana. Once there, we are warmly welcomed by our local colleague (in Dutch) who takes the group together with the guide to a classic Cuban hotel in the old town. It's not about the 4 stars, (because there are only 2 or 3), but the authentic atmosphere that takes you back to earlier days. First sleep and then continue tomorrow.

DAY 2

An early breakfast - after all, we are already awake anyway - and then immediately explore the city. For this we use the classic cars that have been provisionally patched all these years. But very well maintained and often almost in original condition. What an experience. In between there are stops at a cigar factory and Ernest Hemmingway's cafe. And a traditional lunch in a family restaurant followed by a cigar and rum tasting. Life is good in Havana. In the evening there is a visit to a salsa club where people can enjoy the exciting music until the late hours.

DAY 3

On the way to Vinales, the region where tobacco cultivation takes place. Hilly, varied and above all very green. So many different trees and vegetation with higher mountains on the horizon as a backdrop. As a local means of transport we have chosen the horse. Exciting but not at all scary. Crossing the site via narrow paths we get to see the most beautiful views time and again until we arrive at an authentic tobacco farmer. There we get to hear (and see) everything about the products that we cultivate and buy the very best cigars we have ever smoked. So the day goes by and we make our way to our hotel. And then first a delicious mojito. After all, that's the national drink here.

DAY 4

We keep the momentum going and today we go to Las Terazzas. There in the national park is an ecological hotel in the middle of the jungle trees. Of course we will also do fun things there; first take a route with a zipline and in the afternoon to a river with waterfalls.

DAY 5 AND 6

After a few days of 'hard' work, it is now time to relax. We go to Varadero to relax and enjoy the sun, sea and beach. This has not much to do with authentic Cuba, but it is very pleasant. Usually with 'all-inclusive' and plenty of choices in terms of food and drinks.

DAY 7

Time to say goodbye to this special country and its very friendly inhabitants. So on to Havana and then with the night flight back to our own Netherlands. Cuba, you were fantastic.

Things we noticed:
- Very green land with a wide variety of vegetation.
- Very friendly people, not pushy
- generally very cheap, you can sometimes buy a Mojito from 1.5 euros (converted)
- The country has hardly been modernized since the 1950s, so a lot of charm but also limitations.
